Collectors collect military badges for so many reasons; some do it because they have served in the armed forces and would like to collect the badges as a remembrance of the old days. Others do it because they have close family members who have served at some time or the other in the armed forces. Some do it because of their strong sense of patriotism for their country and because they feel a need to honor all the men and women who have served their country.

Whatever be the reason for their hobby, there are many types of military badges that collectors of badges of the United States armed forces can choose from. They fall under six different categories which correspond to the six departments of the United States Defense Forces; the Army Badges, Navy Badges, Air Force Badges, Marine Corps Badges, and Coast Guard Badges.

In addition to these badges, there is the Presidential Service Badge which can be awarded to both military and civilian members; military personnel who are employed as full-time military staff to the President, and civilian members who work at the White House. Civilian staff includes social aides or those individuals assigned to the White House Communication Agency, or the White House Transportation Agency.  As this badge is an award based on the individual’s service record, it can be worn on a military uniform lifelong, even after employment ends. These badges are individualized and are created for certain recipients and thus have a unique serial number stamped on them. Their uniqueness makes them a much sought after collectors item.

Another badge that is a must have among collectors is the Flight Surgeon Badge, which is given to military personnel who are flight surgeons and are qualified medical officers. This badge was first issued by the United States Army during World War II. The qualifications that are required in order to be eligible for this badge differ among the various branches of military service. There are different ratings for this badge too, like for instance, the Army and Air Force both issue this badge with a basic, senior, or master ranking, while the Navy and Coast Guard award it in one ranking only. The Marines are the only branch of the armed forces that do not award this badge because they do not have their own medical wing.

The Naval Flight Officer Astronaut Badge is issued by both the Navy and the Marine Corps as a breast insignia, and it consists of a pair of golden wings with crossed anchors and a shield. The recipients of this badge are qualified naval flight officers, who have undergone an extensive training in aviation, airborne navigation, electronic warfare, and weapons deployment tactics.

The Air Force Academy Professor Badge was created in the 1980s, and it recognizes officers who are full-time professors at the United States Air Force Academy. This badge is a permanent decoration given to any officer who holds an advanced academic degree and renders academic services in the Air Force.

As all these badges are awarded for special services rendered or exceptional qualifications earned, they are of great value to any serious badge collection.
